Dental crowns are custom-made restorations designed to cover and protect a damaged or weakened tooth. A crown can restore the shape, strength, function and appearance of a tooth when a filling alone may no longer provide sufficient restoration.

When Might You Need a Dental Crown?
Your dentist may recommend a crown when a tooth has been significantly weakened or damaged.
Common reasons include:
- A heavily filled or weakened tooth
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- Significant tooth decay or loss of tooth structure
- Protecting and restoring a tooth following root canal treatment
- Replacing an existing crown that has deteriorated
- Improving the shape or appearance of a suitable tooth

CEREC Same-Day Crowns
At Medina Dental Clinic, we use CEREC digital dentistry technology to provide same-day crowns for many suitable cases.
Traditionally, crown treatment can involve impressions, a temporary crown and a return appointment after the permanent crown has been manufactured by an external dental laboratory.
With CEREC, we can digitally scan the prepared tooth, design the restoration and manufacture a ceramic crown at our clinic.
For many suitable cases, this allows the permanent crown to be prepared and fitted on the same day, reducing the number of appointments required.
What Happens When Getting a CEREC Crown?
Your dentist will first assess the tooth and determine whether a crown is appropriate.
The tooth is carefully prepared before a digital scan is taken. Using CEREC technology, the crown is digitally designed to fit your tooth and bite.
The restoration is then manufactured from a ceramic material at the clinic. Your dentist checks the fit, bite and appearance before securely bonding the crown to the tooth.
Treatment requirements vary between patients, and your dentist will explain what is appropriate for your individual tooth.
Crowns After Root Canal Treatment
Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment can sometimes require additional protection because of the amount of tooth structure that has previously been lost or weakened.
A dental crown may be recommended to restore and protect the tooth after root canal treatment.
Because Medina Dental Clinic provides both root canal treatment and CEREC crowns, suitable cases can often be managed efficiently while minimising the number of treatment visits required.
Crowns or Tooth Coloured Fillings?
Not every damaged tooth requires a crown.
Smaller areas of decay or damage can often be restored using a tooth coloured filling. When significantly more tooth structure has been lost, a crown may provide a more appropriate way of restoring the tooth.
Your dentist will assess how much healthy tooth remains before recommending treatment.
