When Should You Contact an Emergency Dentist?
Contact our clinic if you’re experiencing problems such as:
- Severe or persistent toothache
- Facial or gum swelling
- Dental infection or suspected abscess
- A broken or cracked tooth
- A knocked-out or displaced tooth
- Lost or damaged fillings or crowns causing problems
- Pain when biting or chewing
- Dental trauma

Emergency Toothache
Toothache can have many causes, including tooth decay, a cracked tooth, infection or inflammation of the dental pulp.
Rather than simply treating the symptoms, your dentist will assess the tooth to determine what’s causing the problem.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment could involve a tooth coloured filling, root canal treatment, tooth removal or another appropriate treatment.

Dental Infections and Swelling
Swelling around a tooth or gum can sometimes indicate a dental infection and should be assessed promptly.
Treatment depends on the source and severity of the infection. Where possible, our priority is to preserve the natural tooth, although some teeth may require root canal treatment or removal.
Significant facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or rapidly worsening symptoms can require urgent medical attention. Seek emergency medical care if you are experiencing these symptoms.
Broken or Cracked Teeth
A broken tooth doesn’t necessarily mean that the tooth has to be removed.
Depending on how much healthy tooth structure remains and whether the nerve has been affected, treatment may involve a filling, root canal treatment or a dental crown.

What Happens at an Emergency Dental Appointment?
Your dentist will first assess the problem and may recommend dental X-rays or other imaging where clinically appropriate.
The immediate priority is to diagnose the cause of your symptoms and determine what treatment is required.
Sometimes treatment can be performed at the emergency appointment. In other situations, initial treatment may be provided and a further appointment arranged to complete your care.
